oh man that sounds like a good bookstore. Jealous.

the B&N/Borders thing is a shame because borders, while not great, was a bit better. Barnes and Noble is only good for their sale section. I got this huge leather bound King James Bible (thing is massive and filled with all sorts of Medieval and Renaissance drawings of like God being angry and skeletons and fire in Revelation) for like $20. Also got this big illuminated version of Dante's Inferno.

that bookstore sounds rad. The only bookstores around here are Barnes & Noble (if you don't have that in Aussieland, big chain store. terrible selection. high prices. The "teen paranormal romance" section is literally 6-8 times the size of the entire poetry section)

and this little used bookstore that I like, but has a really bad poetry section. You can tell its mostly stuff people had to buy for class and then they ditch. Tons and tons of 17ht-18th century stuff. buncha pope, dryden, spencer, etc. Nothing after like the 30s or 40s at the lastest (and even then barely any of that)

just had to go back to my tumblr to see what is up recently. Yeah, none of that stuff has any real possibilities beyond what it is. It just exists.

The stuff that will start going up in a month or two is more like what I was saying w/ juxtaposition of images and all that.

and that's where we totally disagree. Something like Sharon Olds, I read it and there's really just one way to take it. But something really minimal or strange or with a lot of juxtaposition, there's lot's going on. The strangeness and uncertainty of their structure. You can read them a bunch and still not entirely "Know" them. It makes it interesting.

Yeah, Roggenbuck's spelling is all intentional. He used to write really minimalist stuff spelled properly (but not capitalized at all, since he was big into ee cummings) then he started doing a lot of found text and internet based stuff and started spelling things like that (which honestly is kinda rooted in cummings too). He's got one poem called "I AM A NATURE POET AS I ONLY MURDER IN THE FOREST"

[RE:Sobin] you just read it and feel like you're the last person on earth and the air is cold and you're standing on a cliff and everything beyond you is mist and the world is limitless. One seems like a better use of language. But not that poetry can't be personal.

Whitman does that too, Ginsberg, O'Hara, and some newer people I like. But they make me want to go along w/ them for the ride. Olds makes me just think "ehhh, probably wouldn't wanna hang w/ u"

I just skimmed around this video from the white house poetry reading thing (obviously its all gonna suuuuuuuuuuck because its a lame white house event of middle of the road garbage, but I was curious). One kid did this spoken word memorized version of a Sharon Olds poem that annoyed me. I had to read a bunch of her stuff for a women's lit class. And humorously enough, whenever I think of Sharon Olds I just remember you talking about her a bunch. So I just thought I'd rib you a bit. My one friend who I write poems with really likes her so we joke around about that sometimes too, I guess.

Personally, I think her ego gets in the way, and I ain't buying her schtick. I guess I'm not too big on "confessional poetry." Like just hearing a woman talk about looking at her butt in the mirror and talking about her butt vs. something like Gustaf Sobin
