The Beach Boys - Wouldn't It Be Nice (The Girls Can Hear Us Remix) Don't Look Down - Hoodie Allen Sinister Kid - The Black Keys Passion Pit - Dreams (The Cranberries Cover) Beautiful Day (Remix) - U-N-I Whoo! Alright Yeah... Uh Huh - The Rapture Why: What up what up, day numero uno here on Mondays del Musico. First things first, if this post seems a little rushed, unfortunately it's because it is. Sorry guys, but I promise I'll make it up to you next week. Anyways, on to the good stuff. Since this is day one, I'll give all of you a quick little heads up on what you can expect to see from me. In all honesty, it could be anything. Probably a lot of remix and electro stuff but my music tastes see few borders so I'll be trying to bring you fresh tunes from across the board week in and week out.
This first posts gonna be pretty short and to the point so let's just get into it...
For those of us in the northern hemisphere today is June 21 which marks the official start to the summer solstice. Well, what better way to jam in true summer fashion than to some Beach Boys? Rightfully so, song number one is a new twist on a summer classic with The Girls Can Hear Us remix of The Beach Boys' "Wouldn't It Be Nice". This Canadian duo released their debut LP "Every Day" not too long ago so if you're diggin' the song go check that out. The album features the upbeat, club banger type beats produced by Edmond Huszar along with rap-style vocals added by Will Steep. It all meshes together for some upbeat party songs that'll get your foot tappin.
Number two comes from one of my favorite bands out there right now, Passion Pit. Had the great chance to check them out live earlier this month and it was a good time. Good vibes and good music leads to good times. Some of the songs didn't hit as hard live as they do on the album but all in all a great show put on. Everyone around was pouring in sweat because it was just one big dance party. Anyway, heard them cover Dreams by The Cranberries for the first time and fell in love instantly. Not much else to say here, give it a listen. Good song, good cover.
This last one I'm putting up here pretty much just for the video. It's a good song too though..."I Feel Better" by Hot Chip. Saw this video one night on late-night music videos and I had been listening to Hot Chip for awhile now, but this threw me a huge curveball. Found the video hilariously creepy and it's one of my favorites. Watch it till the end, it's worth it I promise. Plus the music is sick anyway.
That's all for tonight. Sorry if today's isn't up to your expectations but work with me while I get into the swing of things. I promise it'll get better ;). Why: 3 song this week from me to start things off. Welcome to the first weekly music post here! Let's get right down to it. 3 fairly upbeat songs, in 3 different ways.
The first is by The Black Keys, if you haven't heard of them - now you have. Don't forget. These guys are up there with the rock elite, and they're absolutely in the ranks of the best rock group in recent times. Sinister Kid has been a late-favourite of mine. It feels like such an understated song, with more thought put into leaving things out then putting them in. The Black Keys are fully capable of making quick work of getting people on their feet through catchy riffs, but this song seems to do it in such subtle ways. "You know I wouldn't have it any other way..."
My second pick is more of a pop-pick. Kid Cudi's been ripping it, and beyond other claims to fame that rappers give themselves, Cudi's to me is pure cool. He's like a Lupe, but in a totally different way. That and he's a supporter of How to Make it in America, which I'm stoked to see move into Season 2 on HBO. Dat New "New" shows off his style quite well, not mentioning once how many cars he owns or bitches he... flies around the place. This song's hard not to enjoy, unless you hate anything thats popular.
Third one's a weirder one. I'll leave it's commentary 'as an exercise to the reader'... cause who's reading this far anyway? Why: Well, most of you who frequent the music forum (mainly the Hip-Hop thread) already know a lot of what I listen to... So I figured for this Music Monday deal, I'd throw you kids a 12-6 Curveball and throw some artists in the mix that I've never talked about on here before (besides Drake).
Don't Look Down - Hoodie Allen : Their free mixtape, called Making Waves is one of my favorite projects to drop over the last few months. I like to think of them as... Pharcyde meets Bart Simpson, who then proceeds to say hello to Winston Churchill. If you can imagine that. Most artists like to say they're trying something really new, but Hoodie Allen is actually like something you haven't heard before, so check 'em out, they're super under rated, they definitely need a little more buzz.
Beautiful Day (remix) By U-N-I is one of my favorite songs in the summer, flat out. Their mixtape Before There Was Love is kind of like, summer with ADHD put on to a disc. It's great music for this time of year though, whether your just chillin' driving down the expressway or doing whatever the opposite of that is. But Beautiful Day is a nice laid back song, with a pretty long list of guest features. The throwback beat goes really well with the honest and playful verses. And if you can't tell, they're from LA, if that means anything to you.
The Resistance by Drake ... well when you saw Drake on here you probably sighed to yourself, and then said "dammit". Even though he's pretty corny sometimes, Wheelchair Drizzy said some pretty real stuff on this one. And if ya can't respect that ya whole perspective is wack.
