Welcome to SB-C 2010 Members!
Home to one of the largest, and most popular skate sites on the web! Here at SB-C, you’ll find discussions on the latest videos coming out, newest team riders, latest shoe releases, and more! This is a great site for all your skateboarding needs once you get to know your way around the place.
But before you dig in to the tons of topics we have for you to take part in, let’s take a second to go over a few keys things we at SB-C value in a new member.
After Registration
So, you’ve found a User Name, verified your E-Mail address, and now you’re ready to start posting, but don’t exactly know what you should do first to get off on the right track.
Above you is circled the “Noobie Forum”. Within the Noobie Forum, you can make a new thread to introduce yourself, or look at the many Sticky’s we have for you to read on many various parts of what makes SB-C.
Once you go in the Noobie Forum you will find this page. Underlined, we have 5 very helpful threads for when starting out here at SB-C. Each one has useful info when trying to figure out the ropes of this place. Take a few minutes, and read through the first page or so of each thread to get a sense of what SB-C is all about. After that, you will be one step closer to becoming a valued member at SB-C!
Searching The Forum
After you’ve read through a few threads in the Noobie Forum about SB-C, and the works, now it’s time to start exploring through the many sections the forum has to offer. Let’s say you’re interested in what the “General Skate Talk” section has.
After clicking “General Skate Talk”, you’ll come to this page. Either choose a thread that appeals to you, and post in it, or go to the Search Bar to see if you can find what you’re looking for. As such:
After clicking “Go”, you’ll come to the search results for “Emerica Hsu”
Before doing anything, CHECK THE DATE of each thread. If there are older than 1 month, DO NOT go into it, and post. This is what is called Bumping.
Bumping
Bumping is when you go to a thread older than 1 month since the last post, and post a reply. No one likes this. NO ONE. The thread is old for a reason. Either the thread became uninteresting, or a Moderator Closed the thread for certain purposes. The ONLY time when bumping a thread is acceptable is when you post a very thoughtful, contributing post. But, posting “lol”, or “I agree” or something along those lines will cause problems for not only you but everyone. If you bump unreasonably, you WILL be warned, and possibly Banned temporarily based on how severe the bump is. So bumping is something you should never do, as a new or old member. This rule applies to everyone of the forum.
Reputation
As you are looking through the forum, you will most likely soon find someone say something along the lines of “Help me for some posi”, or “Negged for being gay” or something like that. You are probably wondering what “posi”, and “neg” mean. “Posi” is short for Positive Reputation, and “Neg” is short for Negative Reputation.
How do I get Reputation?
Most of the time, people on this forum will give you positive rep if you are either: funny, helpful, or find something for someone (like a link to a pair of shoes or something like that). Here’s is an example from a member who is highly respected here, and has lots of Positive Reputation…
As you can see from this member’s reputation comments, he is a funny, and helpful member. Also, if you’re just an overall chill member, and don’t start trash talk with anyone, and just be cool, people will take notice to that, and give you Positive Rep.
Now, for the other side of reputation. Negative reputation. Negative rep is easier to receive from members than Positive rep is. One of the easiest ways is asking for rep. Whatever you do, DO NOT ASK for Positive rep! Other ways of getting Negative rep include spamming, make insensitive comments, being annoying intentionally, or being a jerk. Here’s a good example of what happens when you are those things…
Here you see lots of Negative reputation given to this member. One of the biggest things this member did was make an insensitive joke about Michael Jackson’s death. The forum is usually pretty laid back about jokes, but not always. Choose the jokes you want to post wisely, or it could end like this.
How to Post effectively on SB-C: By: Relisch
This is my guide on how to post here on SB-C. Each section will cover a different type of thread, and show both good and bad ways to respond. I will also at the end show pictures of what may happen to your reputation if you post in the bad matter. PLEASE NOTE: all original posts, and replies are entirely made up by me.
REMEMBER: THINK BEFORE YOU POST!!
Before we get to into it, I have a short guide on how to post:
Feel free to skip over this if needed.
A GUIDE TO POSTING ON SB-C
Step 1: Find a forum you would like to post in, and click it:
Step 2: In this forum, find a thread you would like to post in:
Step 3: Click the thread, and scroll down. There are two options: Post Reply, and Quick Reply. The Post Reply will take you to a page with extensive options. Quick reply is very limited option, but is faster to post, and you can always “Go Advanced”
Now I will post:
First I will use QR:
And bingo! There it is:
Now for PR:
And there it is:
Okay, now on with the guide:
First, let’s do a help thread. This is a thread that can be about mostly anything the OP needs help with, whether skating, or in life.
The original post is:
Hey! What do you guys think about this: I need to split up with my girlfriend. She is a huge bitch. The only problem is that she’s a psycho path, so if I break up with here, she’ll probably kill me. I just need to know like the perfect hint to tell her I would not like to see her any more.
This is a BAD way to respond:
Hey! What do you guys think about this:
I need to split up with my girlfriend. She is a huge bitch. The only problem is that she’s a psycho path, so if I break up with here, she’ll probably kill me. I just need to know like the perfect hint to tell her I would not like to see her any more.
Dude, you’re a fucking faggot. Grow some balls and break up with that bitch.
First off, this kid is obviously not a faggot. Second, he is obviously going to break up with her, so the second sentence is unnecessary Also, I think it would be safe to say that this poster has never had a girlfriend, or was dumped recently by an ex-girlfriend. This post contains no positive value to the thread, and will most likely end up in a big, fat neg.
Now for the RIGHT way:
Hey! What do you guys think about this:
I need to split up with my girlfriend. She is a huge bitch. The only problem is that she’s a psycho path, so if I break up with here, she’ll probably kill me. I just need to know like the perfect hint to tell her I would not like to see her any more.
Okay, dude. You’re in a really tough situation. To be honest though (and I’m assuming she’s in high school) I don’t think she would kill you. She has way to much to lose. The most she’ll do is fuck up her MySpace about you, not talk to you for a while and tear down any pictures she has of you. Not a big deal. So just break up with her, it won’t be bad.
This is a great post. It gives the help the OP asked for, and it reassures him that breaking up with her is the right thing to do. It also calms him down, by telling him that he is a bit overreacting to the “psycho path,” and that it may not be as bad as he thinks. A post like this will usually result in a nice posi.
This time, we will be doing a general discussion thread, or a thread that basically is talking about anything. These can vary from video games, life stories, skating stories, ect.
The original post:
So yeah I just got a PS3, but I’m not sure what good games to get. I was thinking about Madden, or maybe Skate 2. Any other ideas?
A BAD response:
So yeah I just got a PS3, but I’m not sure what good games to get. I was thinking about Madden, or maybe Skate 2. Any other ideas?
Haha, the PS3 sucks major dick. Why wouldn’t you buy an Xbox 360? The Only GOOD games for PS3 are COD games.
Okay? So first, if you don’t own/like PS3, why the fuck would you post in here? This isn’t a “Let’s argue about game systems thread,” it’s a “Tell me good games thread.” Who cares if you don’t like PS3 or any of their games?
Now, the RIGHT way:
So yeah I just got a PS3, but I’m not sure what good games to get. I was thinking about Madden, or maybe Skate 2. Any other ideas?
I’ve had a PS3 ever since they came out. Some of the games I like are; Resistance 2, MW2, Ratchet and Clank games, Rock Band, and GTA4. You should read reviews, and watch game play of a game that you might want to try, and then you wonÃt buy something you won’t like.
This poster has had a PS3, so you know they know what they’re talking about. The he contributes by listing games he has liked. He also suggests a good method of choosing other games the OP might be interested in.
Now for the third and final thread, an opinion thread. These are some of the best, and worst, threads of SB-C. These also vary quite a bit. It can be hard to make a bad post in these, but it’s possible.
The original post is:
I was sitting in the car the other day, and I was wondering: How many of you guys like the Fallen skate team? I really like them. They have a lot of good members and Chris Cole is a beast.
Now a GOOD agreeing post:
Yeah, the Fallen team is pretty damn sick. I really like their videos, especially Ride the Sky. It was so sick. Not to mention how good their shoes are.
Now a GOOD contrasting post:
Meh, the Fallen team is alright. They only have like two good members, Jamie and Cole the rest are all blah. The do have some good videos but that’s about it.
Each one states what their opinion is, and then backs it up with some “evidince.” The guy who agrees supports himself by saying “I really like their videos, especially Ride the Sky. It was so sick. Not to mention how good their shoes are.” The guy who apposes supports himself with “They only have like two good members, Jamie and Cole the rest are all blah. The do have some good videos but that’s about it.”
Now a BAD agreeing post:
The Fallen team is so amazing! I can’t even believe how rad they are!
Now a BAD contrasting post:
The fallen team sucks. They have forever, get over it.
Both pots state their opinion, but fail to back it up what so ever. Without backup, an opinion is nothing, therefore making these posts worthless.
Now for a simple overview on how to post a review:
So, a review can be on anything. Decks, trucks, wheels, bearings, DVDs, etc. But I ways see the same old one paragraph, with one picture “review.” So here is how to write a nice review:
Before you go and write a review, I recommend reading over some of the ones by the CW’s
Make sure you have had the product long enough to make a quality review on. I.E: The deck is worn/broken, the shoes are ripped, the trucks are broken, the wheels are flat-spotted, etc.
So first, gather some pictures of whatever product you are reviewing. usually as many of the colors you can, (if it’s a shoe) some before and after pics, and any other pictures you feel necessary. After you have you pictures, make a base paragraph about what the product is, where you can get it, prices, and size and shape info, and anything else you think would be good.
So, you’ve got your pictures and base paragraph. What’s next? The review, obviously. Usually reviews are made with three or four paragraphs dealing with different aspects.
-Looks
-Shape
-Grind-ability
-Durability
-Concave
-Turning/Response
-Grip
-Durability
-Comfort
-Pop
-Skate-ability
After you have reviewed the product in those aspects, it’s time for a closing statement. Tell us your rating for the product, if you would recommend to a friends, and if you would buy this product again.
Okay, so there you are. But before I leave, I’ll give you a few other tips:

ALWAYS use correct spelling, and never use AIM abbreviations

ALWAYS use correct grammar, too.

NEVER flame, or bash members in your posts. This will usually result in a ban.

Make sure that your posts are clear and make sense.

There is an edit button for a reason. No need to double post.

Try to make your post long, but not to long. No one likes reading a wall of text, or a one word post.

”Cool story, bro” and TL;DR are NOT allowed in story threads.

Be cautious when posting pictures.

Smileys can be good, and bad. Use them with digression.

NEVER bump a thread that is any older that two weeks. It’s just annoying.
Oh, and as promised, here are some pics of what may happen if you follow/don’t follow this guide.

AND REMEMBER THE BIGGEST RULE: THINK BEFORE YOU POST!!
Some final bits you might want to know
Written by Iskatehard.
Chances are you’ve spent some time on other messageboards before finding this place, and that’s all cool.. But you should know that SBC sort of flows very differently than most other forums. Knowing this and going with said “flow” is possibly one of the biggest keys to having an enjoyable time here and in building up a decent reputation.
First thing to note is that each forum has it’s own way of working, if that makes sense. Obviously, General Skate Talk is a bit more organized in ways than General Off Topic. Just because you’ve used one forum a good bit doesn’t mean you should take the same behavior into another forum. Always browse some threads and try to get a good understanding of it before you begin posting.
Skateboard-City is pretty chill. For sure one of the most laid back online communities I’ve ever come across.. A lot of shit slides here that probably wouldn’t at some other places. The staff is generous in that they don’t click “ban” every single chance they might have (they really DO cut a lot of users breaks), and people aren’t always so quick to jump up and say “hey, uh.. That’s too off topic” and the such.. And THIS bit is what (atleast I think anyway) makes SBC what it is… But while this is the case, you have to understand the limit on things. Just because you can fuck around a little bit here and there doesn’t mean you can skip from thread to thread always posting random nonsense in the name of humor if you will.
Many times new users come and act pretty chill.. But then they seem to notice how laid back it is, and then they go on a spree of making horrible posts because they think it’s cool. This is pretty much the easiest way to get off to a bad start on SBC, and to likely doom yourself in the sense you’ll probably never get a solid reputation. Remember, you only get one first impression.
Oh, and finally.. As shady as it sounds..You have to remember that SBC is a pretty defined community. A lot of people are familiar with eachother here, and that in return offers them a bit more leeway when it comes to being able to fuck around and such. Just because somebody else pulls it off doesn’t mean somebody else can. I know it doesn’t sound fair, but hey, it’s how it is. Get off to a good start and you’ll probably reach that status though. Good luck with that. If you follow this guide, you’ll be set
