Donavon Frankenreiter – Pass It Around – Review

Pass It Around is Donavon Frankenreiter’s 5th solo album. As his usual style, its those soft surfer-feel jams that are great for a mellow mood.

Let me take you down a quick summary of each of the tracks:

  1. Life Love & Laughter is probably the most upbeat song on this CD. Despite employing the cliche 3 L’s, it actually manages to be a great song. With its quicker pace, its one that stands out as a favourite of the album.

  2. Too Much Water is a very soft sounding song. It’s got a short riff that feels a bit too short as it gets repeated over and over as the parts in-between the chorus run. Not a bad song, but one I might find myself skipping over if control isn’t too far away.

  3. Come With Me is a great & simple tune that starts of with just a guitar and Donavon singing. It’s simplicity and good sound keep you listening as more sounds get added into the mix, making it sound fuller and fuller. In the last half of the song we get introduced to the Chorus twice, and its a more upbeat but equally simple sound. Overall a great tune, takes you for a little bit of a ride as the song continues to change.

  4. Your Heart is the most popular song from this album (*Itunes) and it adds up. It starts off quite simple with a just a little guitar and Donavon singing. Things get added into the mix, and the chorus kicks in quite quick — and it’s catchy! You might hear this on the radio, enough said.

  5. Hit the Ground Running is a smooth tune of Donavon singing to a guitar that sounds a bit less natural than the rest. Easily listening tune, nothing too wild about it.

  6. Mansions on The Sand is great tune. For some reason I feel like its a song that is great to talk over — that’s actually meant to be a compliment! I just think this one goes great for a bus/metro playlist on the way home from work, or in your car with a lady driving home well past midnight when you’re tuckered out. If your exhausted and with somebody, this ones perfect. It just fills in the silences with the right sounds.

  7. Someone’s Something feels like it would be the 2nd most popular song on this album, after Your Heart. I can’t confirm that to be true, I never checked — but it’s just got a ‘new’ feel to it while being a bit more powerful than some of the others. Maybe not something you’d hear on the radio but… it’s one of those that’s hard not to like.

  8. Sing a Song another great tune, catchy chorus, mellow sound — if you like Donavon Frankenreiter, or even Jack Johnson or Ben Harper, then you’ll have a hard time not liking this one.

  9. Pass it Around… ahh the CD title. Isn’t it a rule that the CD is named after the best song? … Probably not but I have my theories. This one honestly doesn’t stand out too much in my mind. It’s not a bad song — definitely not. But it’s one of those that just kinda slips under the radar. Not a song I’d find myself putting the effort into clicking on individually to put on, but also not a song I’d skip over if it came on.

  10. Come Together — whoops! I lied. This would be my bet for 2nd most popular song on itunes for this album. Someone’s Something would be 3rd. This one feels a bit more powerful sounding and it’s got a chorus that’s sure to be a hit with the ladies. This kinda floats alongside Better Together by Jack Johnson in my books. I think most people who liked that song will find themselves liking this one. Comparing them, they sound quite different, but its just that couply theme & good overall song to match that I think will get people.

The Contest:

So we had a quick week-long contest for the best 2 mellow photos to win a copy of this CD & stickers from Skateboard City. Here are the two winners:

And

By SkaterPotater

Congrats! Winner’s have been PMed.

Thanks to those that entered! There were some other good entries, but we were looking for the best photos matching a “mellow” mood. It was more important to match the mood to make it a legit contest entry than reuse a past great photo and argue its mellow… and so, These two take the cake for sure.
